Navigating Unprecedented Challenges in the Previous Exams: PSHS-NCE 2022

In the face of the formidable COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) encountered an unprecedented obstacle, leading to the cancellation of the National Competitive Examination (NCE) in the previous academic year. Faced with the imperative to protect thousands of examinees from potential exposure to the virus at testing sites nationwide, PSHS swiftly adapted by introducing a novel system – the National Competitive Examination Requirements for Admission, Criteria, and Evaluation (NCE-RACE).

The Evolution of Selection: NCE-RACE Unveiled

In response to the exigencies of the times, the NCE-RACE system emerged as a strategic pivot in the admission process. This innovative system aimed not only to ensure the safety of all participants but also to maintain the integrity and fairness of the examination. The introduction of NCE-RACE showcased PSHS’s commitment to adaptability and resilience in the face of unforeseen challenges.

Two-Stage Selection Process

Stage 1: Predicting Success with PNG

The first stage of the NCE-RACE selection process delved into the academic history of applicants. Specifically, it calculated the Predicted NCE Grade (PNG) by scrutinizing their final grades in Science and Mathematics from Grade 5. This meticulous evaluation served as a predictive measure of an applicant’s potential success in the rigorous academic environment of PSHS.

Stage 2: Crafting Futures through Essays

The second stage introduced a qualitative dimension to the selection process. Emphasizing the importance of effective communication and critical thinking skills, applicants were required to submit essays. This essay submission served as a crucial assessment of their ability to articulate ideas, showcase intellectual depth, and communicate effectively in writing.

The Triumph of the Deserving: Results and Impact

Out of the 3,843 students who undertook the challenges of the second stage, a commendable 1,768 emerged victorious, meeting the stringent criteria set by PSHS. The results, announced on December 17, 2022, approximately a month after the application deadline, were a testament to the resilience and capabilities of the successful candidates.

In summary, the adaptation to the NCE-RACE system in response to the COVID-19 pandemic not only ensured the safety of participants but also introduced an enhanced and multi-faceted selection process. PSHS, undeterred by challenges, continues to prioritize excellence, innovation, and the recognition of deserving scholars in the pursuit of scientific education and advancement.
